Lovely containers for outdoor scented candles from £6
17 hurricane lanterns I'd love to own... plus my favourite summer candles I burn on repeat in my own garden.

I’ve done lists of candle lanterns in the past where I’ve included all types of styles to suit various tastes, but frankly I’m too old to be guesstimating what modernistas like; all those boring angular silver glass boxes are just not me I’m afraid, so you ain’t getting any of those. I am a chicken mother with a maximalist décor obsession and more wicker baskets than handbags, so the edit below is what I’d love to own myself. Pair these with a jug of icy Provencal rosé decanted from a box, bowls of cheap crisps and tangerines, and a pack of cards surrounded by carnival lights. Enjoy!

And now to put something in it!
If you fancy treating yourself to an excellent quality summer candle to put inside one of these containers, please may I recommend the following? They’re my own personal favourites, all with excellent burn quality and scent projection, and they’re constantly lit chez dP:
Meadowfarm Lifestyle Smoked Orange & Honey candle, £25
To me, this smells like a smoky version of Ambre Solaire suntan lotion – I know, odd, but STUNNING. It’s sweet and citrussy, but creamy rather than sharp – imagine the smell of an orange-flavoured Petit Filou – with a very faint roasty-toasty smouldering sooty edge.
Imvelo Candle Co. Frangipani signature candle, £20.95
Succulent, greasy, fleshy, sweet and steamy tropical petals hanging in the air like you’ve stepped off a private jet in Tahiti and someone’s adorned you with a floral garland and handed you a Rum punch. In candle format. HEAVEN.
Diptyque Citronella candle, £60
Squeaky clean, refreshing and tonic lemongrass done with elegance, plus it doubles up as a mosi repellent.
Acqua di Parma Insieme candle, £71
I love a vanilla-laced amber scent, but often in the summer that can be too cloying. Not this baby. It has that signature AdP Italian sunshine at its core, with a warm, welcoming, cosy and moreish aura – like the smell of lemon drizzle cake fresh out the oven, wafting through your garden.
Jo Malone London special-edition Myrrh & Tonka scented candle, £74
This vessel is part of a limited edition collaboration with the British paint and wallpaper brand Little Green, and I love the pastel heathery colour (you can get it in the normal black vessel for £4 cheaper though!). I know everyone usually chooses one of JML’s more typical summer scents such as Lime, Basil & Mandarin or English Pear & Freesia (both of which are in the Little Green collection too) but I think this is the sexiest alternative if you want your garden to smell rich and swirly, soft and spiritual, blending myrrh’s incense tones with Tonka’s caramel vibe. Yum.
The seagrass M&S hurricane lantern is lovely - I really think they've outdone themselves this year in the summer homes dpt! All so 😍 ...
Ooooh they're ALL gorgeous! 💖
